Loyalty to Love

As humans we are loyal to so many things. From people to brands to causes we care about, we are incredibly devoted (sometimes blindly). Yet everything is dynamic: relationships end, companies shut down and causes evolve.

It’s been said that people are loyal to what they feel they can trust. On the path to living from my Wisdom, I’ve learned there is only one loyalty I trust to keep me in my Integrity: the loyalty to Love.

When I encounter a challenge, I turn to the wisdom of Love as my informant on how to respond. I filter situations through Love’s lens to arrive at the Wisest action to take. While it sounds very nice and sweet, it doesn’t always feel that way.

Put into action, Love pointed me towards building tolerance for my excruciating emotions in order to hear their message, instead of numbing out with media, food or gossip. It stretched me into choosing blind faith when I’d feel safer doing almost anything to have some control. It’s forced me to leave the comfort of the old unhealthy ways I did life, changing the only paradigm for living I’d ever known.

Calling on Love’s intelligence can illuminate life in so many ways:

  • Love gently encourages you to get up out of bed and do one small thing to move your

life forward, because that’s kinder to yourself than marinating in the negative thoughts

that were waiting for you as soon as you opened your eyes.

  • Love reminds you that you’re bigger than the family trauma you inherited. It recognizes

you’re better off remaining loyal to your own healing rather than to a lineage of

suffering that keeps you repeating what mom, dad and grandma did with their lives. Love knows that when you heal, the family heals.

  • Love quietly informs you when it’s time to go and not because the other person is not

worthy of you staying. Rather, because it knows you will both evolve to your healthiest selves with space and not while toxically enmeshed with egos at war.

  • Love uplifts you when you need to stay the course even when it’s a daily struggle,

because there is a lesson that can only be learned by walking through the hardship to

the other side, not by running away.

  • Love inspires you with the reminder that there is more abundance in the world than

staying in a job that feels oppressive, giving you access to the courage you need to jump

ship with no plan. Love knows that you will land in the right place when you finally sense into your worth as a human being who deserves more in life than just getting by.

In challenging times, one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves is what we are being loyal to. We may find we are unconsciously remaining loyal to a faulty belief system that belonged to three generations past. We may be extending our loyalty to an outdated coping mechanism from when we were 13 years old, which is now compromising us at work. Or, we may be loyal to people we don’t have healthy connections with, just because that’s what we’d always done to fit in and avoid loneliness.

Thankfully with our awareness comes the choice to adjust our compass. This can take the form

of literally asking the question ‘what would Love say or do’ and then listening. Said differently,

it’s the act of moving from our noisy headspace to the vast intelligence of our heart. What lies

in the reflection of that quiet place is the promise of learning what is in the highest good of

ourselves and those around us.

Where is your loyalty compass pointed to?
